Allied Health Technician EKG/Phlebotomy (AHT)
Phlebotomists are skilled health care professionals who have
been trained to collect, transport, handle and process blood
and other specimens for laboratory analysis using venipuncture
and micro collection techniques. In addition, phlebotomists
must be able to identify and select equipment, supplies and
additives used in blood collection and understand factors that
affect specimen collection procedures and test results. Many
facilities also require the phlebotomist to perform electrocardiography
(EKG) tests that measure and monitor the electrical activity
in the heart.
Phlebotomy/EKG Technicians work in physician offices, hospitals,
clinics, and other health care facilities and organizations.
Phlebotomy/EKG Technicians also work for insurance companies
to establish health and life insurance policies. Similar to other
growing healthcare professions, the demand for Phlebotomy/EKG
Technicians is expected to continue to grow substantially.
If you like activities that have to do with ideas and thinking….Enjoy
work that involves practical, hands-on problems and solutions…like
to work with data and detail, and then you should consider a
career as an EKG or Phlebotomist Technologist. EKG Techs perform
Non-Invasive (no cutting) procedures in the cardiovascular (heart
and lungs) area and use quality control techniques to aid in
diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients. Phlebotomists
Techs draw blood from patients or donors for analysis or other
medical purposes, assemble blood collection equipment, and reduce
the fears of patients by explaining the process. At Dorson Vocational
Training, you’ll get the classroom instruction and practical
experience in your chosen area that will make you successful
for the job or in further education. This course will include
important practice and background information on anatomy of the
heart and physiology, medical disease processes, medical terminology,
medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, laboratory
assisting, phlebotomy techniques and procedures, electrocardiography
and echocardiography. Additionally, students will practice with
equipment and perform hands on procedures and other clinical
practices with live patients under the close and direct supervision
of Instructors.
The Phlebotomy/EKG certificate program at is an intensive, curriculum
with classes in Basic Phlebotomy and Basic EKG, followed by hands-on
clinical experience. This certificate is designed for students
interested in taking technical courses for immediate entry into
a field of employment, and for current health care workers who
would like to update their phlebotomy and EKG testing skills.
Students interested in these fields should possess a high school
diploma or GED equivalent.
